Abstract

This study has been performed to investigate the effects of individual and group music play therapy program on treating, preventing, and reducing SRD among Korean elderly in rural areas between 2007 and 2009 In this research, 149 male and female elderly people were chosen from three retirement facilities and leisure program places in Taean-gun and Hongseong-gun in Chungcheongnam-do. This study attempted to develop two step pre and post t-test models for providing art and group activities through long term play sessions. As a result, this study shows that the group activity music play therapy followed by other leisure activities such as rhythm dance significantly reduces depression rate in retirement facilities but not in community residents. This indicates that the program enhances the emotionality of the facility residents' who have only been having routine daily activities. From the qualitative studies, statements of the program leaders and the elderly participants also brought positive change to psychological stability, reducing negative aspects of their emotionality, and improving social interaction, and attitudes toward other residents. The group music and activity therapy will regain, improve the aged people¡¯s positive self-concept, and therefore contribute to improving the quality of their overall life. Finally, this study strongly recommends that in nursing home sets, fine arts and activity programs need to be activated by social workers as well as artists, so that the clients will experience significant improvements in their behaviors and personal relationships.
